Clue 8:  Border

We’ll be adding a 3” border all around.  Mine is going to be purple, because I like purple.

Sew 2 of the 3-1/2" Border strips to form a long (approx. 80") strip; repeat with another pair of strips.

Cut one of the remaining strips in half and sew one of the halves to a remaining full strip to form a strip approx. 60" long' repeat with the remaining half and full strip.

Measure the length of the quilt (measure in the center).  Cut the 80" strips to that length and sew one to each long side of the quilt. Press seams toward the border.

Measure the width of the quilt, again measuring in the center.  Cut the 60" strips to that length and sew one to the top and to the bottom of the quilt.  Press toward the Border strips.

NOW all that’s left is the shouting.  After the quilting and binding, of course.

"Courtyard" Mystery Quilt, Clue 7

Now we’re going to rotate and place the blocks, and sew them into a top.  The seams should all be pressed so they “nest” up against the seam next to them.   I sew the rows together, and press the seams in the top row one direction, the seams in the next row the opposite direction, and keep alternating.  But you can do it the way you usually do.)

Paying careful attention to the orientation of each block, arrange and sew the blocks into 6 rows of 4 blocks each, as shown below.  (To keep from getting confused, or my eyeballs rotating around in my head, I follow the direction the Blue “arrow” is pointing in each block.)  Every 2 x 2 block section repeats.

When sewn together, it creates a secondary, interlocking pattern.

It's all over but the shouting.  Well, and the border.....  See you next week for the final clue.

Putting the Blocks Together!


1.  Using the units you completed in Clues 3-4, arrange and sew a sub-block as shown below.  The 4-patches should be placed so the final seam you pressed are oriented direction of the dashed red arrows.

2. Sew the top two units together, and press in the direction of the solid black arrow.  Sew the bottom two units together, pressing in the direction of the solid black arrow.

3.  Sew the top and bottom units together, pressing in the direction of the black arrow.  The block should measure 8-1/2" at this point.

Repeat to make a total of 24 sub-blocks.

4.  Arrange the subunit with the Pink/Purple units from Clue 5 and the Pink 4-Patches from Clue 3 as shown, placing the Pink 4-Patch so the final seam you pressed is oriented in the direction of the dashed red arrows.

5.   Sew the two left-hand units together, and then the two right-hand units together; press in the direction of the solid black arrows.

6. Finally, sew the left- and right-hand units together, pressing toward the left (the side with the Pink 4-Patch).

Repeat with the other sub-blocks and units to make a total of 24 blocks.  The blocks should measure 12-1/2".

Next week we'll arrange and sew the blocks together into the top.
